As an impactful developer, we recognise and invest in creating positive change, with our priorities centred around people, communities and our planet. Part of that commitment is to constantly improve our knowledge and understanding of the many ways that we can continue to push the boundaries, going above and beyond mandatory requirements for large-scale developers.
Our recent team day focused on the opportunities and benefits of Biodiversity Net Gain. Hosted by nature recovery experts, Nattergal, the Socius and Populate teams headed to Harold’s Park Wildland to help clear the site, support the woodland to thrive, and to learn how nature-led regeneration can deliver real environmental and social value.
Did you know that the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe? BNG is a crucial part of redressing biodiversity loss. According to legislation, developers of homes, businesses and infrastructure in England must deliver a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity compared to what was on site before development. At Socius we aim to deliver a minimum of 50% BNG on and off site.
Director and sustainability lead at Socius, Doug Higgins explains: “It was great to explore the future of land use through the lens of rewilding and biodiversity credits. From walking the rolling estate to dismantling an old fence, it was a day of fresh air, fresh thinking and grubby hands. We left inspired, informed and just a little bit more wild!”

Harold’s Park Wildland site manager at Nattergal says: “You can always tell a great team from the number of interesting questions and, most importantly, the willingness to get stuck into the practical work. Thanks for the hard work and here’s hoping there’s plenty of collaboration to come.”
